Promoting the LHC to the public

An IoP HEPP Group half-day meeting

Wednesday 15 November at Royal Holloway 13:30 – 17:30

The LHC gives particle physicists the best opportunity for decades to promote our science to the public. This meeting will feature short presentations of the planned programme, the results of new data on current public perception of particle physics (adults and schools) and ways of securing funds for projects that engage with the public.

The programme will differ from the usual format since the principal aim of the meeting is to promote discussion and bring out ideas. Session leaders' names are in brackets.

Topics for discussion

  1. PPARC strategy for promoting the LHC (Mike Green)
  2. Public perception: results of consulations with the public, teachers and students (Ray Mathias)
  3. Review of current public activities in ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and Grid PP  (Experimental reps)
  4. Public promotion: discussion (Graham Farmelo)
  5. Schools' activities: discussion (Andrew Morrison)
  6. Opportunities for funding (Robin Clegg)
