Getting an Account

All particle physics machines at RHUL share a common password file, including babar1 and the PC farm. This means that if you can log on to ppu1 you can log on to babar1, bfa or bfb and see the same home area (contact Simon George if you can't). However working with the offline software at RHUL requires you to use remote facilities from outside the group. In order to have permission to use them you're going to need to get computing accounts elsewhere.

You can get all the necessary accounts etc. by taking the following steps.

  • Get an account at SLAC by following these instruction (make sure you sign the objectivity agreement).
  • Get accounts at RAL (on AFS and on the BaBar machines) by contacting Emmanuel Olaiya . Let him know you've got a SLAC account.
  • Become a member of the RHUL bfactory NIS group. You can use the groups command to see if you are already
a member of the bfactory group. This can be done on any of the local machines. If you are not, Simon George can add you in.
  • Log on to babar1, bfa or bfb and check that the directory /local-scratch/$USER exists. If it doesn't contact Fabrizio Salvatore.
  • You're now ready to start using your new computing facilities...
