Dear All, please find attached a photo of the first barrel toroid magnet of ATLAS being lowered into position in the cavern. The toroid weighs about 20 tons, and is the first of eight which will eventually provide the magnetic field for the ATLAS external muon spectrometer. The toroids are superconducting (22kA current) and will provide a 4 Tesla field. Given the limited diameter of the access shaft, the toroid had to be lowered at an angle. Apparently the clearance between the toroid and the shaft wall was less than 10cm. In the photo, the tilted toroid can be seen emerging from the equipment access shaft. The operation was carried out yesterday and took most of the day. I have prepared a short photo sequence of the whole operation. You can find it at: http://www.pp.rhul.ac.uk/~ptd/bt1.html Enjoy, - Pedro.
